The Treasure of the Blues E-mail
Written by Maria Sonora

The Treasure of the Blues BeeOasisThe blues is a great treasure of American musical culture. It stands as the foundation for practically every form of American music in the 20th century, including gospel, jazz, rhythm and blues, rock and roll, and hip hop.

Blues music has its source in African American slave songs, such as work songs, spirituals, and country ballads. This music expressed the sufferings and hopes that came from the painful experiences of slavery and discrimination. From this, the blues developed in the countryside of the southern US near the end of the 19th century, and people listened to it at parties, picnics, and local clubs. In the 1940s, as blacks moved to the cities, many more people heard the blues, and this urban blues evolved into rhythm and blues and rock and roll.

Basketball Slam Dunk March Madness Final Four NCAAJust 17 seconds remained on the clock. The noise was overpowering. 61,612 basketball fans packed the Louisiana Superdome. Georgetown University was playing the University of North Carolina. North Carolina was behind by just one point. The ball was passed to Michael Jordan. He jumped up and shot. The ball  flew into the net. It was the game winner. And the crowd went wild. The date was March 29, 1982. Michael Jordan was just 19 years old. And he made basketball history.

Every year in March, America goes crazy for basketball. Sixty-five college teams play in a tournament. Almost 700,000 people attend the games. The tournament is called "March Madness." And the goal is to reach the Final Four and become national champions.

Basketball was invented in 1891 by James Naismith. He was a Canadian doctor. He worked at the YMCA in Springfield Massachusetts. And he created basketball for his students. He wanted to give them exercise during the long and cold winters of New England.

Doctor Naismith used a soccer ball for the game. And he used peach baskets instead of nets. After making a shot, players had to get the ball out of the basket. The first official game was played on January 20, 1892. And basketball was born.
