Ashley Hastings Many people around the world are studying English. They need English to succeed in work, school, or relationships. Common sense tells us that we can learn to read a language more quickly if we can already understand it well. Common sense tells us that we can learn to write a language more quickly if we can already read it well.

Some language programs use this common-sense way of teaching English. Students work first on listening, then on reading, and then on writing. They practice speaking in all classes. In these programs, listening students learn English while watching movies. Reading students read stories, newspapers, and other things. Writing students create their own stories. In all classes, teachers give students all the help they need.

This kind of language program is called “FOCAL SKILLS.” Students focus first on the skill that is the basis for the next skill. For example, listening forms a basis for reading. Many students (and teachers) say this kind of language program is the best they have ever seen. Students learn the language quickly, and teachers enjoy teaching this way. To learn more, you can visit the International Center for Focal Skills or read about it at Wikipedia.
