BeeOasis Step 3
When I grow up, I still want to be a director. -Steven Spielberg
This quote shows the magic of movies. Steven Spielberg is a grown man, but he loves the movies like a child. He feels a sense of wonder about them. He is already a great film director. But about film, he still enjoys it like a child.
Film is more than magic. It is also big business. The two biggest films of all time are Titanic and Avatar. Both these movies were directed by James Cameron. Taken together, they have earned more than $4,625,000,000. That’s almost 5 billion dollars.
Film is also technology. Inventors made the first movie projectors in the 1890s. Thomas Edison’s company produced a movie projector called the Vitascope. Edison adapted a projector developed by an inventor named Thomas Armat. And in New York City on April 23, 1896, the first motion pictures were shown in the U.S.
Today, millions of people watch movies every day. Actors become rich and famous by making movies. Studios spend huge amounts of money to make films. In 2008, over 350,000 people were working in the American movie industry. At first, the motion picture was just an idea. Now it is a real force that brings work to thousands and enjoyment to millions.
