In this BeeOasis video, Dr. Hitoshi Nishizawa explains his research. He compared TOEIC scores for two kinds of students. Some studied for one year in English speaking countries. Others did extensive graded reading in Japan. Some of these students read more than 3 million words. And they got about the same TOEIC score (around 600) as those who studied abroad for one year. Dr. Nishizwawa even claims that reading 6 million words can get you better TOEIC results than studying for one year abroad. Three million words and 6 million words are a lot, but Dr. Nishizawa says that you can do it easily as a hobby.
Thank you, Dr. Nishizawa. These are amazing results!
Dr. Nishizawa’s results make you think of this question. What happens if a person does extensive reading and lives in an English speaking country?! Anyway, make sure you know how to do extensive graded reading.
