The Flamingoes, (1907) by Henri RousseauHenri Rousseau was born on May 21, 1844. He was a famous French painter. At first, he worked as a government official. But he retired in 1893 so he could focus on painting. He created bold and colorful paintings. His paintings showed imaginative dreams and unusual jungle scenes.

During his life, people laughed at his work. But in time, Henri Rousseau was recognized as a self-taught genius who created high quality art. Rousseau received some advice from teachers. But he said that he had “no teacher other than nature.” Rousseau died on September 2, 1910.
