BeeOasis Step 2

The Kindle on Many DevicesAn e-book is an electronic book. People can read e-books on personal computers and mobile phones. A special machine also exists just for e-reading. It is called an e-book reader. The Sony Reader is one popular e-reader. But in November 2007, Amazon.com created an e-reader, too. It is called the Kindle. This is important because Amazon is the largest online store in the US. Now the company can sell e-books and e-readers.

The first Kindle could hold up to 1,500 books. But by 2011, the Kindle could hold up to 3,500 books. That is a large library in your bag! The Kindle is smaller and lighter than most paper books. And it is thin like a magazine. The Kindle works like a mobile phone. You can buy books wherever you go. When you buy a book, you can get it in less than a minute. And before you buy, you can read the first chapter for free. International newspapers, magazines, and blogs are available for the Kindle. When the Kindle first came out, you could choose from 230,000 e-books. But by 2011, Amazon offered over 810,000 e-books!

1500 Books in Your Bag: Amazon's Kindle BeeOasisClearly, e-books are the future. If you can carry a whole library of books in your bag, that’s convenient. Paper books will never go away. People like the feel of paper in their hands. But e-books are flexible. The Kindle also has a computer voice feature. It can read books to you. You can also put audio books on your Kindle. These books are read by professional actors, and they are wonderful. Kindle also has software for the iPad, iPhone, Mac, PC, and many other devices. All these devices sync. This means you can read a Kindle book on your iPhone. Later when you open your Kindle, you can start reading where you left off. That’s high-tech reading!
