The film Slumdog Millionaire is about an 18-year-old boy from Mumbai, India. He comes from a poor part of the city. And he wins a large cash prize on a TV game show. But after he wins, he is arrested by the police.
The police think he cheated in the game. They force the boy to tell the story of his past. And he remembers growing up in the poor part of Mumbai. He tries to explain how his memories helped him answer the big-money question on the game show.
Slumdog Millionaire received 10 Oscar nominations in 2009, including two for best song. And it won 8 of them, including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Song. The film has won many other awards too, including Golden Globe Awards, Critics’ Choice Awards, British Independent Film Awards, Chicago Film Critics Association Awards, and the Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards.
Many critics praised the film. Joe Morgenstern reported in the Wall Street Journal that “There has never been anything like” this film. He said the film broke new ground and that the style was “earth-shaking.” Other critics said the imagery in the film was powerful. And they were impressed with colorful and refreshing energy of India. In less than a year, the film reached a rank of #35 on The Internet Movie Database.
