People have been drinking green tea for about 5,000 years. Green tea came from China. And today it is produced mainly in China and Japan. Green tea is different from other kinds of tea. The leaves are not processed much. So green tea has a fresh and slightly bitter flavor. The taste is similar to raw tea leaves.

greenteaIn Japan, drinking tea became an art with the tea ceremony. This ceremony is often called “sado,” or “the way of tea.” Tea clubs are popular at Japanese schools, colleges, and universities. The most important teacher of tea in Japan was Sen Rikyu (1522-1591). He set out the central ideas for the way of tea: harmony, respect, purity, and peace. As such, the tea ceremony is not just about tea. It is a form of discipline. Students may learn a method of inner peace through the making of tea.

Many people believe green tea is good for your health. And doctors have asked scientific questions about green tea. Can green tea reduce the chances of cancer or heart disease? Can green tea prevent the common cold? Can green tea help people lose weight? The answers to these questions are not clear. And the National Institute of Health gives the science about green tea a low grade. So doctors need to do more research about green tea. But green tea may help you feel more alert. And many people enjoy it every day — as a simple way to refresh the body and mind.
