BeeOasis Step 2
Note: This is a scary story and may not be appropriate for younger readers.
Many years ago there was a rich man with a blue beard. He was ugly and had no wife. Actually, he had had many wives, but strangely, they all had left him or disappeared. The ugly man wanted to marry again, and he was fond of his neighbor’s two beautiful daughters.
He asked his neighbor for the hand of one of the daughters. But neither of the daughters were interested in marrying the strange, hairy-faced man. Bluebeard, however, persisted. He offered them a life of comfort and luxury. And finally, the younger daughter agreed to be his wife.
After about a month of marriage, Bluebeard told his wife that he must leave for a time. He had some business in a faraway land. He gave her his keys, and he said, “While I am away, feel free to use everything. Entertain your friends in any way you like.”
But then he showed her one special key, and he said this: “This small key belongs to the room in the basement of the castle. That, my dear, is the one room you must not enter. You are not even to put the key into the lock. If you do not do what I say, the punishment will be harsh.”
Bluebeard set out on his journey, and for a time his wife enjoyed herself. She invited her sister Anne to stay with her, and she found pleasure in entertaining friends in her great home. But again and again she wondered about the room. She thought to herself, “Why am I not allowed to enter the room in the basement?”
Her sister Anne warned her repeatedly, “Don’t even think about it! Stay away from that room, and enjoy your easy and happy life.”
But at last, her curiosity became too strong . . .
